What a licensed arborist actually is

Louisiana is one of the states that regulates this trade. The Department of Agriculture and Forestry, through its Horticulture Commission, licenses arborists after examination. That examination covers tree biology, hazard assessment, pruning standards and safe work practice. It is a verifiable credential you can check with the department.

A great many companies advertising tree service in Baton Rouge are not licensed arborists. They may still be competent at cutting wood. The difference shows up in the diagnosis: whether the tree actually needed removing, whether the pruning was done at the branch collar or left as stubs, and whether anyone assessed the root plate before deciding the tree was safe.

Hurricane Gustav went directly over the city in September 2008 and weakened a large share of the mature canopy, and those trees are still failing today.
