St. George became Louisiana's newest city after incorporating from unincorporated southern East Baton Rouge Parish. How grinding runs
- Locate services. Louisiana 811 is called before grinding. Irrigation and low voltage lighting are located on site because they are not covered by 811.
- Clear the collar. Soil and rock around the stump are cleared, since grit dulls the wheel fast and gets thrown.
- Grind below grade. Standard is 6 to 10 inches below grade. Deeper where you intend to replant or pave.
- Chase surface roots. Major surface roots radiating from the stump are ground where they are a trip or mowing problem.
- Backfill or haul. Chips back in and topped with soil, or removed entirely and the hole filled with clean fill.

How deep do you grind?
Six to ten inches below grade as standard, which is enough for turf. If you are replanting a tree in the same spot or pouring a slab, we go deeper and take out more of the root mass.
Do you take the chips away?
Your choice. Chips backfilled into the void settle over a few months and need topping up. Hauling them off and bringing in clean fill costs more but gives a finished surface straight away.
Can I plant a new tree in the same place?
Not directly into the ground chips, because the decomposing wood ties up nitrogen. Either grind deep and replace with soil, or plant a few feet to the side.
Will grinding kill the surrounding grass?
The grinding area itself gets disturbed. Turf around it is normally fine. We clean up thrown chips before leaving.
